The first question you need to ask yourself before considering business coaching as a career choice is why you would want to become a business coach. People are attracted to business coaching for a number of reasons and it is important that you are clear on exactly why you would consider training as a business coach before you start. Business coaching is like any other business … it requires consistent focused effort working towards an empowering vision. So before you start your business coaching training or certification make sure that you are very clear on the vision for your business.

So the next obvious question is what sort of training should you take to become a business coach. Do you need to do formal training in business coaching? Do you really need to get business coaching certification? There are different schools of thought on this. If you search Google you will find that there are lots of different coaching schools and training programs that will all tell you how important certification is. In my experience of being a business coach for more than 7 years I have never once been asked by a potential client what training I have had or if I was certified.

So while it is of value to get some training before commencing your business coaching enterprise the certification or peice of paper you end up with has no real world value in terms of attracting clients to you. At the end of the day your potential clients are more interested in your track record and past success. So you reputation as a business coach is far more important.
